Lesson 5 of 7
GA4 Enhanced Measurement
① Connect your GTM container
Paste your container ID to load it into this page. It only ever runs here.
Advanced: use a specific environment
Before you build a single trigger, know what GA4 already collects for free. Turn on a web data stream and Enhanced Measurement starts capturing page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video engagement, file downloads and form interactions, no GTM work at all.
This is the lesson with no build step, on purpose. The skill here is restraint: don't rebuild in GTM what GA4 hands you automatically. Reserve GTM for what Enhanced Measurement misses, ecommerce, custom conversions, third-party embeds and anything bespoke. Knowing the line saves you duplicate events and double-counted metrics.
Goal
Learn what GA4 captures automatically so you only build the events it doesn't.
Debug in Tag Assistant
Copy this lesson's live URL and paste it into GTM Preview, that is the page Tag Assistant connects to. It has the clickable elements, so this page stays clean for reading.
- In your GTM, click Preview.
- Paste the live URL above and click Connect.
- Interact with the live page and watch your tag fire in Tag Assistant.
What you should expect to see
page_view, scroll and outbound click events arriving on their own. Each is toggled per data stream in GA4's admin, not in GTM, so you can switch any of them off if you'd rather handle it yourself.
